This spring, as part of Village of Sciences Ankara’s "Artificial Intelligence, Society, and Science" series, we explore the historical, technical, and societal dimensions of AI. We invite you to join our sessions, where we delve into topics ranging from political economy to large language models, energy-environmental impacts to inequalities, and from art and literature to ethical debates.
The fourth session of the series, "Artificial Intelligence, Energy, and the Environment," will be led by Ebru Voyvoda.
This talk aims to examine the energy and environmental footprint of AI technologies. On one side, we face a world grappling with the climate crisis, rapidly depleting carbon budgets, and the urgent necessity of phasing out fossil fuels. On the other side, we see an AI industry that consumes increasing amounts of energy and water, builds massive data centers, and is poised to multiply global electricity demand. In this session, we will attempt to reconcile these two realities, discussing what AI’s energy demand entails and the tension it creates with global climate goals.
